The Convenience Of Having Linen Closets To Keep Things Organized

Posted in Organizing on May 25th, 2010 by Donna Walters – Be the first to comment

If you aren’t yet an organizing master, try getting some practice in your linen closet. This is an organizing task that is quick and easy, and brings satisfaction for a job well done without too much effort.

Unless, of course, you use your linen closet for things other than linen. Then organizing gets a lot more complex. If you also store towels, coats, cleaning products, and other stuff in there you need to stop for a moment and assess the space available. Is the linen closet overcrowded? Can you reach everything as needed? You may want to move some items to a more appropriate area of your home and free up space.

After you have figured out what will go in the closet, you can then decide how to configure your storage.

Linen closets generally function best with a series of shelves. A hanging rod, and shelves, is also a usable configuration. Try using hooks and small baskets also. If you use these for smaller items, the items won’t get lost and the closet won’t start looking all cluttered.

The items that you use most frequently should be kept at eye level for easy access. This would include bed linens and daily use towels. Some people also use their linen closets for storage of out-of-season coats and blankets. If you do this as well, keep these items in proper containers or bags. This keeps them fresher.

Some people also keep cleaning products and appliances in their closet. It’s not uncommon to find the iron and ironing board, and vacuum cleaner in a linen closet. If you do this, consider where you put everything if you have young kids.

With children in the home, safety becomes the first concern. All cleaning products should be out of reach. Store them up high on a shelf. Then, put a child-resistant latch on the door of the closet.

For added luxury, add a nice fragrant sachet to the linen closet. This will keep your towels and bedding smelling lovely, and be a treat when you go to take them out.

In addition to organizing stuff, the writer additionally regularly pens articles about cheap silver rings and engraved silver bracelet.

Suggestions On How To Replace A Sash Cord On Double Hung Windows Without Too Many Headaches

Posted in Organizing on May 22nd, 2010 by John Redworth – Be the first to comment

How to replace a sash cord is a lot easier when you understand the mechanics of a double hung window. Every double hung window has two sashes, the top and the bottom. The frame that secures the glass is a sash. The sides of that frame are the jambs. Sash weights sit in back of the jambs. They are connected to a cord pulley system. The weights keep the windows balanced and easy to open.

Stops or wood moldings attached to the jambs create grooves that a sash window uses to slide. In order to remove the frame you need to pry the parting stop and the inside stop from the jambs.

Before you start this project, make sure you have the correct tools and material readily available. You will need new sash cord, a putty knife, a hammer, a utility knife, putty, finishing nails, paintbrushes and in case you chip away the paint, enough paint to touch it up.

Remove the molding on both sides of the bottom sash. Place your putty knife near each nail that is holding the wood in place and gently pry them loose. Practice patience as the wood can split easily if you try to rush.

Once the moldings are off, pull the sash out. You can remove the broken sash cord from its keyed slot. There should be a panel which allows access to the sash weight, remove it. If no panel exists, you will need to remove the side window casing to access the weight.

There are usually many coats of paint on these windows after years of use. Remove the paint to find any screws that are securing the access panel in place. Remove the panel and cut off any cord that is connected to the pulley. Feed the new sash cord on top off the pulley and into the crevice that holds the weight. Tie the new cord to the weight. Replace the weight and tie a knot on the end of the cord. Allow the weight to dangle three inches from the windowsill when the sash is open all the way.

Reinstall the frame, with the finishing nails secure the stops. You may need to fill in any gaps with putty and touch up any paint that chipped in the removal process. The project is now complete and you should have a window that once again opens easily. How to replace a sash cord is not as difficult as it may sound.

Where The Clothes Hanger Originated From

Posted in Organizing on May 21st, 2010 by Miron Yavik – Be the first to comment

It is rare that we spare a thought for the basic tools we use each day to keep our homes and lives organized. One example of these kinds of items are white plastic hangers. Hangers a re a simple, basic, necessary part of our lives, but who first had the idea for their construction and design?

There are many different kinds of hangers that we use in our society and they serve many different purposes.

The most popular design and the one we are most familiar with, and the type most other hangers were based on is the wire hanger, but before there was even a wire hanger, we had the coat hook. At the Timberlake Wire and Novelty Company in Jackson, Mississippi, they needed some more coat hooks in 1903 and this paved the way for a brad new invention. Albert J. Parkhouse, an employee of the company came up with an innovation to solve their trouble of not enough hooks for the number of coats at the company.

Mr. Parkhouse fashioned a piece of wire into 2 ovals and then bent the ends into a hook shape. This was the first example of a wire hanger. In 1932 a patent was created for a clothes hanger. Schulyer Hulett created this design which featured cardboard tubes mounted over the wires in an effort to prevent clothes from wrinkling when hung on them. A 1935 upgrade included a cardboard tube for the lower part where you could hang pants. You can still see this style of hanger being used today as it is an inexpensive choice when the hanger in question is going to be disposed of, such as with dry cleaning and shipping.

Between 1935 and the present day, clothes hangers have been continuously evolving. The majority of homes today utilize plastic coat hangers. When plastic hangers are used, you gain the benefit of the bar being more substantial for clothing to hang on, and these hangers will not bend.

When visiting upscale retail shops, you may see expensive fine wood clothes hangers, as these retailers use them to display coats, suits, and similar clothing items. You will notice that the design hasn’t changed much, but they do have a more attractive appearance. It is argued by certain historians, that one of Thomas Jefferson’s many inventions was the wood clothes hanger, which he utilized at his Monticello home. You may see specialty hangers designed for coats and suits, that are shaped in such a way that the hanger follows the shape of the clothing’s shoulders. This type of hanger is currently available in a variety of materials, including plastic.

It’s amazing that this extremely basic instrument, can be such a big part of our daily lives. A closet full of wrinkle free clothes, is something that we have all come to expect.

An Overview Of Woes And Fix-Its For The Plague Of Plastic Windows In London

Posted in Organizing on May 21st, 2010 by John Redworth – Be the first to comment

The plague of plastic windows in London seems to be more of a scourge on the beauty of once-proud manses of eras gone by. Anyone can see that cheap plastic windows do NOT fit in with the majestic, and occasionally creepy, gargoyles that flourish on the rooftops of many Victorian buildings.

Here is a short list of just a few reasons cheap plastic is making more of an appearance in London these days – along with some alternatives for mixing affordability with original quality:

Consumers are told by companies that make – and therefore promote – double glazing, that the windows are an altogether better deal as far as buying and replacing goes. The aged wood on the beautiful wooden sash windows are more complicated due to their intricate craftsmanship, and are therefore, notorious for sporting a hefty price tag when they require repairs.

Conservationists have tried to remind consumers that it’s less of a cost – in the long run – to have the antique windows repaired because the lesser-quality plastic ones need to be replaced more often – which adds up to significant cash going out. However, many homeowners choose to opt for them anyway because of the affordability, and throw caution to the wind on future replacements.

Additionally, the environmentalists help this along by insisting that the new windows are better for the environment, because double glazing on the panes work to keep the warmth in during winter – which also prevents carbon emissions from escaping into the air and adding to the impurities already there.

But the historical conservation societies are begging people to keep using their antique wooden sash windows on their houses, and even have a few suggestions for alternatives that work like double glazing. The first is to use brush stripping around the edges of the window frames, creating a seal that way. If that’s too costly, there’s always silicone or rubber that work just as well, and are cheap to buy.

Another good way to seal and proof is to install shutters that completely cover the windows. If you can’t afford them, you can substitute some very heavy curtains to drape over the windows instead, and this does wonders in containing the heat to the house – as long as the windows remain completely closed. And still another workable choice is an actual secondary glaze – provided by a unit on the inside window – that performs like double glazing.

So there you have a few pros and cons of the plague of plastic windows in London. However, no matter which side you ask, it’s most likely both will agree that the struggling economy shouldn’t prevent a common solution from being found – one that will allow the implementation of a cost-effective insulation fix for the home owner, that’s also safe for the environment, and which ensures that the antique wooden sash windows can retain their rightful places on the house, where they belong.

Hints About How Sash Windows Work

Posted in Organizing on May 16th, 2010 by John Redworth – Be the first to comment

In the opinion of many, sash windows are an intrinsic feature of ‘period’ homes and should be saved at all costs. Well, maybe not ALL costs, but definitely worth the time and trouble to repair rather than replace. Some repairs are easy enough to do yourself so here’s a little about how sash windows work.

One astute old-home restorer in New England, USA, had an interesting observation. He said, speaking of people living in older homes, that most likely less than half of them have ever experienced a window in their house working as it was intended to do. Some of these things are a hundred years old plus. They probably worked well at one time and they can again. It’s not that hard.

Sometimes the only thing keeping a window from working is too many coats of paint. Maybe it’s been painted shut or had so many layers painted on that it’s gotten gunked up. Some paint remover, a blade and a scraper could go a long way to fixing the problem if it’s that simple.

More than likely, if it’s an older sash window you’re dealing with, it’s not operating correctly because of a problem with the weights and ropes (or chains) that are used as a counter-balance to the window’s movement. These weights are usually hidden from view, encased within the window frame itself. Access is made through a cover, usually made of metal, which is embedded in the surface of the frame.

It’s natural for the chains or ropes holding up the counter-weights to wear out after long decades of use. You may want to hire someone to do this job. If you get someone who does this kind of restoration as his/her main line of business, they should be able to fix you up pretty fast.

What’s the best advice on old double-hung ‘period’ windows? Repair rather than replace. Wood windows are efficient. Wood is a great insulator. Don’t let someone try to convince you that the new plastic, thermal paned, hi-tech windows should be installed as replacements. Plus, they just wouldn’t look appropriate on your older home.

Here’s some more advice. If you hire someone to fix your house, hire someone who knows how sash windows work. Better yet, hire someone who does nothing else in their business other than restore old windows. A specialist… That’s the ticket. They’re out there, somewhere in your area, and probably on the Internet too. Take a look.

Tax Deductible Items Not To Miss

Posted in Organizing on May 16th, 2010 by Zach Allred – Be the first to comment

Tax return preparation is very difficult for most people even if you are going to a trained professional like my self. Often deductions are missed simply because the taxpayer has not thought of them and the tax preparer has not asked. Here is a list of the most commonly missed tax deductible items.

1. Medical mileage deduction for 2010 is $.16.5 and it was $.24per mile for 2009. The number of miles from home to doctor appointments and hospital appointments need to be included. When you start adding these up it is amazing how much it totals to.

2. Most know that mortgage interest is deductible but did you know the interest you pay on a 2nd home is also deductible? Savvy tax payers will include their motor home in this deduction if it has a working bathroom and kitchen.

3. Charitable deductions are made and often forgotten about. Sometime we just cannot remember the box of cookies we bought from our neighbor’s daughter who is with girls scouts as well as many other donations throughout the year. Add them up and you will not be sorry.

4. If you had to move during the year for work then do not forget moving expenses. You must meet certain tests so be sure to discuss this with your tax adviser. Tax deductible items include actual out of pocket expenses for oil and gas. Also include expenses for storage of household goods and lodging expenses.

5. Deducting alimony can provide an annual tax reduction of $3,360 per year assuming $1,000 paid per month and you are in a 28% tax bracket. Do not pass this one up as the alimony is also taxable to your ex.

6. Student loan interest paid on loans for education is deductible. People often miss this one because a lot of changes take place after graduation and this deduction gets over looked. With rising education costs the student loan interest really adds up.

7. State income taxes that are withheld on your W-2 are deductible. In addition, do not forget the amount of taxes paid to your state for a prior year filing.

8. Personal loans you have made to family and friends who have not repaid you are deductible. The IRS does not require you to take these people to court to be able to take this deduction. If you have capital gains and are looking for a way to off set them this deduction can be golden.

9. Did you dabble in any kind of business on the side? Be sure to add up all the expenses and at least let your tax preparer know about your effort to enter the self employment arena so he can help you include all the deductions you entitled to.

10. Rental income from a family member is usually unreported because we want to beat the system. First this is illegal but second you are missing out on a very large tax deductible item.
