Helpful Things To Know About The Miter Gauge

Posted in Innovation on May 19th, 2010 by Roy Bouldin – Be the first to comment

Woodworking is a hobby that many people enjoy doing. Most people that have done this type of thing have used a miter gauge. This is a very valuable tool for these people when they are working on particular things that require angles being cut.

The miter gauge is accessories that can help a person maintain stability of the wood they are working with while using a saw of some sort. A table saw or a hand saw are two that can find them to be a handy accessory to have around.

Not only will they help keep the wood from moving around, they also have a very accurate ruler type of device on them that can help you create extremely accurate angles. These are common in things like trim that we find in out homes.

Years ago they would be made out of cast, but now with advancements in technology they are found to be made of aluminum. Also a long time ago a person would have to buy this as a single item, now they can be found to come right with many of the saws that a person can buy. You may still need to buy one if you need a particular size or to replace an old one when the time comes that it is worn out.

There are also a lot of different sizes that these items come in. This will depend on the project that the person who needs to get one is working on to discern. This can be very important as you want to make sure that the size you buy will accommodate the saw that you are using. Some only can be used with certain saws so you need to read the label on them or ask a sales associate for assistance if there is any uncertainty at all.

There are many stores that can be found that sell these popular workshop items. Hardware and department stores are amongst the most common places that they are found. Looking through the selections that are available in these stores can be a very good way to make a decision on what type of miter gauge you should get.

For those that prefer to shop from the comfort of their home there are a lot of web sites that sell accessories like these. Using the internet and a search can often produce a ton of results that you should look carefully through. This can help you when it comes to comparing specifications as well as prices. Once this is tackled you can then go with the best choice to fit your task as well as your budget.

There are also a lot of resources that can help you learn how to use this type of accessory. You can find a lot of tutorials that offer help with this. Many of them are offered in the form of videos so that a person can actually see what is being done with them. This can be the perfect option for those that have a bit of difficulty in manipulating them the way that they want.

Company Failure: Diagnosing the Problem in an Innovation Economy

Posted in Innovation on May 9th, 2010 by James A Gardner – Be the first to comment

Some companies have yet to discover that in the new Innovation Economy, know-how is less important than knowing what to do with know-how. The capability to translate traditional assets – brand, knowledge and intellectual property – into value is increasingly the distinctive mark of companies that have unlocked the secrets of success.

For everyone else, attitudes verge on the medieval. And the signs are obvious in management teams who fit in this category.

One sign is the constant checking on the external communication activity of your research and development (or innovation) team, no matter how insignificant. Usually, a sick company has people whose whole job it is – called Corporate Comms or similar – to control external messaging. Another sign is nervousness when it comes to innovators participating in conference programs. And still another is the elimination of collaboration technologies, or worse, a failure to provide them at all in the first place.

But undoubtedly, the most significant sign of all is when innovators cause outright panic when it is realized they are collaborating across organizational boundaries with technologies like social media. The panic is even worse once it is realized that this is occurring without the express permission of management.

Ultimately, the problem is that innovation teams which share are able to create synergies which often result in the ability to create “man on the moon” type projects. Everyone else is stuck with the glacial progress that results when you have to do everything yourself.

Too much reliance on trade secrets and other legal protections of this kind makes each innovation group a lone island.

It means the really big, really significant innovations can come only from the largest players in a particular category, who can afford to fund the work required. In most markets, this approach means that superlative change can come only from one or two very larger players.

Sharing makes it possible to create much bigger innovations than would otherwise be possible. Failure to allow sharing results in inevitable failure of an organization in the new Innovation Economy.

The role of sharing, and more particularly its implementation formally in the disciplines of Open Innovation are the subject of James A Gardner’s freely available online innovation book. It contains a wealth of material on innovation management, and is a helpful resource for any innovation effort.

What Is A Data Logger Exactly?

Posted in Innovation on May 9th, 2010 by Adriana Noton – Be the first to comment

Counting numbers and statistics can be a harrowing and very time consuming task for a business or corporation or association. Going into the world and actually hand counting the many things that go in is not quite the type of job that people flock to. Data loggers help with a lot of the strenuous and boring counting and does not even need human interaction to work. What is a data logger though?

Data loggers are very useful for measuring and counting vast amounts of things. Usually, they are computerized and do not require any help from people. They often have many sensors that are programmed to pick up different things.

The use of data logging systems has been implemented in many different jobs all over the world. Many different organizations can carry about their business much easier thanks to these. They are used to collect and assess data, as well as archiving it for future reference.

One of the main uses of a data logger system is at weather stations. These loggers are often used to measure the amounts of accumulation of precipitation and are also used to measure wind speed and temperature accurately. These loggers then log the information into a database. This is why it is so easy to pull up temperatures for this day five years ago.

Most weather stations that take part in this technology have no need for people to be working there. The computer systems all collect the data and store it automatically. This increases efficiency and even decreases costs to the companies.

Another use of a logger of the data is for geologists. These loggers can be set on top of volcanoes to measure the amounts of fumes coming out of the cone. They can also be placed underground in certain spots to measure vibrations and levels of earthquakes.

Believe it or not, the railway companies also use these loggers. They are used for many different things. Some of them are used to count trains and record daily traffic on certain tracks. They are also used to inspect the trains for wheels that are getting too hot as the train goes by at its normal speed. This saves a lot of time rather than inspecting all the cars manually.

Researchers out in the wild also use them in major wildlife programs. When an animals are tagged its information all goes into a central database. When they are captured again all of their information can be updated and re logged.

The highway department is a religious user of data logging systems. Information about highway traffic is logged and used a lot. Speeders are also caught on camera and sent to computers that allow the police department to find their addresses and send them tickets without having to pull them over.

These loggers are one of the best measuring and counting devices every created. They help researches and agencies count and number things without even having to be there, cutting down on time and costs. The question of what is a data logger is being asked a lot. For most it is an unknown term, but it is one of the most widely used systems in the world.

There Is Only One Full Proof Teeth Whitening System

Posted in Innovation on May 7th, 2010 by Andrew Costello – Be the first to comment

With all the dozens of whitening systems out on the shelves today it is hard to know which one is more effective. Choosing the one that actually works and doesn’t just rely on their marketing claims is a different story. There is a different whitening system for different levels of stained teeth. In this article I will present three different whitening systems and when they will be effective based on your individual needs.

1. Whitening Toothpaste

Do not trust the claims that toothpaste will whiten your teeth more than just marginally. As a whitening system toothpaste falls short of its mark. Toothpaste will help in the maintenance of an already nice white smile but falls whoa fully short as a viable whitening system. Most use abrasive material and peroxide as their cleaning and whitening agents. These will damage your teeth and provide very little in terms of any significant long lasting effects.

As part of your whitening system you can choose between Aquafresh and Colgate. Both products have been on the market for a long time and may help if you are on a maintenance program. Each brand has specific teeth whitening agents that you can choose from.

My favorite whitening system that uses toothpaste is one that includes grapefruit seed extract as a primary ingredient. Grapefruit seed extract is a natural product and is far superior to the chemically produced whitening agents. With a bit of searching you should be able to find this toothpaste. You may have to go to a health food store to locate this toothpaste.

2. Teeth Whitening Strips

Teeth whitening strips are the most popular over the counter whitening system on the market today. The problem is that most peony are too sensitive and can’t use them because of their painful effects. If you have sensitive teeth or gums then this may not be the best option for you. If you can handle the discomfort then this is an effect whitening system and will get you some marginal results. IF yo choose to use this whitening system the try and find one that claims to be for sensitive teeth and gums. Maxodent and Crest both put out a whitening strip for sensitive teeth. You will have to experiment to see which one works best for you.

Open Innovation: A Definition

Posted in Innovation on May 6th, 2010 by James A Gardner – Be the first to comment

What would you guess is the first position of management when you suggest you should license your patents to competitors, share your under-utilized trade secrets with threatening startups, and investigate the possibilities of collaboration with your cousins in aligned segments?

The most probable response is a quick “surely you are mad” as leaders look at you with that slight unnerving expression you get when you’ve done something which is not quite socially right.

There is, however, an emerging movement in the innovation space called Open Innovation which suggests you do just this.

The thinking is, if you have unused intellectual property or uniqueness, your best economic interests are served by licensing that to competitors who might make use of it, rather than let it sit idle. And, in reverse, if competitors have something of value you need, that you reach some accommodation with them that lets you make use of it .

Open Innovation is one of the ramifications of the Innovation Economy which is based on the premise that competitive advantage derives from how well you use know-how, not what know-how you have. The understanding of the ability to use know-how well in a particular problem space is a hard to copy advantage that requires investment, development, and in most cases, sustained effort over a long period of time. This is why it is a source of competitive advantage.

Open Innovation is the current de-rigor fashionable business model amongst innovators in many industries. It is especially popular in industries where products do not have very great levels of differentiation, like fast moving consumer goods. It is equally well adopted for industries where the products are very differentiated, like aerospace.

On the other hand, companies that have chosen not to pursue Open Innovation are tending to lag competitors. This is because they are forced to rely only on their own R&D efforts, rather than taking what’s best from industry around them. Failing to share is turning out to be a significant competitive dis-advantage.

Open Innovation is a technique that innovators are regularly using to create new value in their businesses. To find out how you can use it it too, read James Gardner’s free, online innovation book.

Should I Buy A Hybrid Car To Save On Gas?

Posted in Innovation on April 8th, 2010 by Colin Jones – Be the first to comment

When you pull up to the fuel station pump and fill your car up with $10-$70 worth of gas, you may find yourself releasing a huge out sigh. How on Earth did petrol become so expensive? Should you consider one of those new hybrid cars you saw on the TV? Everyone’s talking about hybrid cars anyway. Hybrid cars and other types of cars may seem to be a good idea, but before you go out and do something rash, maybe you should ask yourself a few basic questions about how you can start to save money on gas.

There are many options out there that include everything from staying home to purchasing a hybrid car, but you have to find out what’s best for you. You can only do that by asking yourself the following questions.

Should you just drive less?

For sure, you could spend the rest of your life in the house watching television, but how would you eat then? I know what you’re thinking! You will walk more and so get more exercise. That may be true, but what will happen when you get bored with walking and riding your bike? How are you going to be able to get to the gym then? And, have you forgotten about work? You know you love listening to your books on tape while you are sitting in traffic at the end of the workday. Should you drive less? Perhaps not then. But what should you do? Well, have you ever considered buying a hybrid vehicle?

Perhaps, I should buy a car that is more economical on gas?

Yes, you could do this, but what about when the vehicle starts to depreciate and it’s not as fuel-efficient as you thought it would be? And subconsciously, because you know you have a car that gets more mileage out of fuel, you are going to start traveling more miles than you traveled before.

How about getting up earlier each morning to look for the cheapest gas prices in the area?

Honestly, who has the time for that? If you think about it, you would probably spend your time more profitably finding the right answer to the real question. Do you really want to spend extra time looking for a cheap gas station? What will your boss think if you arrive late for work and tell him you were trying to save money on gas? And really, how long do you think you’ll keep doing that?

Should I find a way to run my car on electric?

Let’s see, you definitely don’t want to have to recharge your car’s batteries every day before going to work because that might make you late too. However, with a hybrid car, you wouldn’t have to worry about that. So, the next question should be obvious.

How about purchasing a hybrid car?

Perhaps you should. It’s possible that buying a hybrid car could be a sensible way to avoid paying higher gas costs. Will your car depreciate right after you drive it off the forecourt? A hybrid won’t do that so quickly because it brings the buyer in more and more money as they save on fuel. A hybrid car really might be a good solution here. However, it is always a good idea to conduct further research on a hybrid car.

Managing IT for Innovation

Posted in Innovation on April 5th, 2010 by James A Gardner – Be the first to comment

No matter what your innovation strategy, and no matter the kind of innovations that strategy leads you to consider, you will inevitably have to accommodate information technology professionals at some time during the process.

Technology is at the center of most production and productivity in many industries, from those dominated by industrial age economics to the emerging innovation economy companies that are presently leading the charge to recovery.

As a result, information technology can be considered either a necessary evil that prevents things getting done or, alternatively, a massive enabler of competitive advantage and worker productivity. Perspectives vary depending on the way an IT organization deals with change on a day to day basis.

No matter how the information technology group is perceived, there is a key thing that those responsible for innovation will find impossible to avoid: the massive emphasis that most IT professionals will place on minimizing change. There are excellent reasons they do this, though it is obviously an anathema to innovators, whose whole role in life is to create productive, valuable change.

In information technology organizations, there will likely be change teams, in fact, whose sole role in life is to make it as hard as possible to change anything. They will rationalize their existence using lines such as “we are here to protect service” or “up-time is our number one priority”. And for those times when change is impossible to avoid there will be a number of gates and governance processes in places designed to make things as difficult as possible. At least, from the perspective of innovators, that is.

Innovation teams have an answer in a disciplined focus of the rigors of Innovation Management. They provide a positive way to manage technologists in an organization, because they create a set of tools and processes that demonstrate value to technologists as well as innovators. They enable the team to show that change is in the best interests of the organization, and, more often than not, in the interests of IT as well.

Bathroom Renovations

Posted in Innovation on March 29th, 2010 by Gordon Foster – Be the first to comment

Changing the layout of any other room in your home is very different from modifying the appearance of your bathroom. Before beginning a renovation, decide if you really require the changes. Try having industrial cleaners come in and give your bathroom a good cleaning. Try changing the arrangement of cabinets and racks to create a different look. If that does not work or if the accessories are too old or damaged to be cleaned, then go and buy the latest fittings available in the market that you can afford.

Once you purchase fixtures such as shower panels, massage bathtubs, cabinets and central floor heaters, decide whether you can install them yourself. It is good if you can, but if not contact an experienced contractor. Appoint a contractor who is well experienced in this field. Also, make sure he holds a license in this area. If the fittings and electrical lines require special approval from the local authorities, apply for them well in advance. Here is a list of the latest models of bathroom accessories.

Steam Baths- They offer a complete sauna experience with temperature and heat controls. Hydro Massage Bath System- It is a whirlpool tub with hydro-jets specially designed to offer massages. Shower panels- There are a variety of shower panels including hand showers, rainfall showers and thermostatic valve system enabled showers for different bathrooms.

When remodeling or reconstructing your bathroom, do not forget to hire an experienced and trusted contractor. Remember that the shower cabinets and the floor tiles are the most important aspects of a chic looking bathroom, and they are often the prime reason for the renovation. The market is full of bathroom accessories, massage tubs and cabinets that will fit your requirements and any budget.

If you have unlimited expenses for remodeling your bathroom, leave the choice to the contractors. Just make sure they use high quality products. Preferences might differ from person to person. For a few of us, the floor tiles are the main attraction of the bathroom (even if the shower panel and the tub are age old). For others, the tubs, cabinets and the panels are the cause of remodeling. Whatever the cause, a good-looking bathroom not only captivates the eyes but also gives a good impression of the whole house and the homeowners.

Hiring to Lead Innovation

Posted in Innovation on March 20th, 2010 by James A Gardner – Be the first to comment

One of the key questions one needs to resolve at the commencement of an innovation programme is what sort of innovator you should hire to lead everything.

This is particularly important, because whether you are running a central innovation team with a participative agenda, or a distributed innovation function with a mandate to shepherd an innovation culture, everything that happens will likely devolve from the particular mentality the innovation leader brings to the table.

One option is to put an entrepreneur in charge: an individual with proven capacity to being small ventures and run them to success. The kind of person who knows everything necessary to run an enterprise on a shoestring and can match limited resources to big problems. This is a leader who has proved they have what it takes to turn individual ideas into something valuable.

On the other hand, is it a better choice to get someone who has experience managing portfolios of activity? Such an individual knows how to make decisions to start things, but also can shut them down. They may not have a great deal of project management experience, but they certainly know how to optimise overall returns.

Most people, given the choice would go for the former. It is the easy choice to make: choose someone you know will at least make a few things they choose to focus on succeed.

Unfortunately, this is not always the best choice.

Innovation leaders who are entrepreneurial will be highly motivated to make their pet projects successful no matter the cost. This, after all, is the way they got to be leaders in the first place. They take good ideas and through personal heroics, make them into something worthwhile. Often, their whole careers have been based on a few lucky successes.

Now, individual heroics may be all very well, but the fact is most innovation projects fail regardless of the amount of effort. Entrepreneurs will usually accept this, so they call it quits at an appropriate moment so they can focus on their next project. They live in the hope that the next project will be the one which is a hit.

For an innovation leader in a corporate organisation, though, this is just about the worst strategy possible. Because innovation programmes last about 18 months, doing things sequentially means you run out time way before you have decent results. This is why hiring someone with an investment mentality is a good idea.

Investors have an intuitive understanding of the fact that the real name of the game in innovation is avoiding concentrations of risk to get to a predictable return. Usually, that means a light touch on a large number of simultaneous innovations, rather than a deep concentration on a few.

Is this the year you commence planning an innovation program and are thinking about your recruitment options? James Gardner’s free online book has genuine advice on how to recruit an innovation leader.

How to Innovate Without Money

Posted in Innovation on March 20th, 2010 by James A Gardner – Be the first to comment

What is a team with an innovation agenda but no budget supposed to do?

It is a situation surprisingly common. Management, especially those who are proponents of innovation culture, feel that all that it takes to get more innovation is to assign a couple of people the task. In many organisations, in fact, finding people is much easier than finding money, so this seems like an easy way to get an innovation programme started.

The issue with this is that making innovation happen is not just about ideas and people. It also requires execution, which is the difference between an idea which sits around gathering dust, and one which can actually be converted into something that creates revenue. Execution, usually, requires money.

Therefore innovators with no budget at all will almost always fail, and here is the reason.

Before anyone can make an investment decision in something new, there are three key questions which need to be answered. The first, which is “can we do this”, is really technical: are the technologies, production capabilities, management systems, and other artefacts needed to create the innovation available? If not, can they be created at a reasonable price? The second question is “Should we do this”, which is actually about the financials of the innovation. And the third question is “When?”, which has to do with market entry timing.

In order to answer such questions, innovators will probably have to pay for research, prototypes and, potentially, the time of analysts. It is rare indeed that an innovation group will have access to all these capabilities in house.

Consequently, an innovator with no money at all has almost no alternative but to try to answer all the key questions him or herself. This mostly results in exceptionally poor business cases, due to the lack of any substantive detail. The result is innovators wind up tossing poorly formed propositions at stakeholders and hoping for the best. Usually, they don’t get taken seriously.

When you start your innovation group, you need to consider the funding options. James Gardner’s free online innovation book has advice you should consider.
